Types of food

Anything we eat or consume for the growth & development of body is known as food. Sometimes, food is also termed as fuel of life. Ultimately food is digested by the digestive system consequently, all the essential elements are absorbed into body and rest is eliminated through the execratory system.

Human race is an omnivorous mammal. Almost it eat consumes everything such as roots, leaves, fruits, meats and so on. But the pattern of consumption is varied from region to region or differs according to geographical conditions.

In Vedas food is primarily classified into three major categories namely; Satwik, Rajasik and Tamasik. So, let us learn about them.

Satwik: Satwik foods are those types of food which are easily available in nature. These are low protein, low calories and non-alcoholic diets. Such food provides minimum energy to support the life system. For example, fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, honey, and natural vegetation and so on. In Vedas or ancient scriptures we can find the specific reference and practice of Satwik foods during the worship of God and nature. In a simpler way we can say that a mankind can be survived alone with the consumption of potato only.

Rajasik: Rajasik food is the category of food which is widely accepted and practice all across the geographical region. Such types of foods are exceptionally aromatic and well taste in nature. This type of food is prepared with the help of aromatic spices and other natural taste enhancer. For example, veg pulaoo, panner, pakora, malai kofta and puris and all. In olden days Rajasik food was primarily cooked at royal places and during the special occasions only; like in the course of the festivals and marriages. Rajasik food is adequately high in protein, fat and sugar. It contains high values of calories, spices. It also involves juicy and non-alcoholic beverages.

Tamasik: A Tamasik food is the category of the food which is highly rich in protein, fats and all. It mainly involves high protein food, brewed beverages including alcohol. For example, red meats, fishes, wines and so on. Basically it is consumed by the people of high altitude and people livening in harsh geographical areas because in such conditions, a human body demands more calories to survive due to its richness in essential elements and vitamins.
