Hello friends, today I am going to provide you the very first chapter of my new novel “I dream about you”. It is a contemporary teen romance novel which talks about the adrenaline rush of youngsters those who are in verge of joining college or who have just started their college life. At the same time “I dream about you” also talks about the expectations or dreams of their respective parents which are already decided without knowing the area of interest or knowledge of their off-springs.

Story moves in a flawless manner with little bit twist, turns & humor. I believe it will connect with every individual reader.

About the author

Introduction

Papa kehte hain bada naam karega (father says, he will make a big name). Beta hamaara aisa kaam karega (my son will do such work), Magar yeh to, koi na jaane (but this, no one knows), Ke meri manzil hai kahan (Where my destination is).

The song is from a Bollywood movie called Qyamat se Qyamat Tak. This is my all-time favorite song as it suits perfectly well to me. Not only this, the song is anthem of my life. According to my dad, I am not a responsible son. I don’t know anything about the real face of cruel world. He used to say that ‘the world is very different and it is not the one, the way I perceive it.’ Let me tell you, I don’t know much about the world or life. For me life is a beautiful thing. We are here to make difference in the world.

Oh! Sorry, let me introduce you myself. My name is Abhishek Gupta. I am only son of Mr. A.K. Gupta. He is a renowned businessman of Darjeeling. Decade ago dad started a business with a scratch and today he runs a million dollar enterprise. Primarily, he operates in multi brand retail business. For him life is a race and it can be measured by your healthy balance sheet only.

Results are announced and overall I got 58% in my intermediate from Holy Cross School. I was totally blind about my career. Many of my friends joined St. Xavier’s College Kolkata and I was still not sure which college to join. But somehow, I had to enroll myself in any reputed college of the country. I knew that with just 58%, I cannot go to Shree Ram College of Commerce. The main problem was I was home sick. I never liked to go away from my home, my place and so on. After making hell lots of brainstorming session finally, I decided to join St. Joseph’s College Darjeeling. The college is the most reputed college of the entire North Bengal and fortunately my relative was there as a professor of Philosophy.

I had scored 78% in my favorite subject called accountancy. With the help of 78%, I got admission in B.Com Honors. It was a very prestigious moment of my life. In our society it was a great thing to get admission in St. Joseph’s College and that too in Honors. Due to admission in St. Joseph’s, dad started day dreaming and began thinking about my marriage without knowing about my little opinion.

Since childhood, he always took decisions in every aspects of my life. I bought toys according to his choice. I wore cloths according to his taste and preferences. He never allowed me to keep long hairs. He never cared about my feeling or choices. Rather he always expected me to perform according to his standards.

It is said that a God cannot be present everywhere at the same time. That’s why he created mothers in this barbaric world to nurture and care the children of God. I was dam lucky. I had a beautiful mother and she was exactly opposite of him. She always gave me a reason to live in this world. There was no match of her unanimous support in every aspect of my life. She was also very happy with my admission in St. Joseph’s College.

It is said that college days are the most beautiful days of any individual. Because every individuals passes through a transformational phase of life. It is the most critical phase of life as every individual experiences a first stage of true adulthood. But in my case, situation was far different. Initially, I had notion of that, college is a place for uncle or aunties type students with big moustache and funky hair styles. Who are in always hunt of bunking lectures, doing protests and fighting for a small reasons. When I was a kid, I developed the same perception due to movies of 1990 decades. I can remember some Bollywood movie of that time like Waqt Hamara Hain, Phool Aur Kante, Khiladi ha… ha…

First day, when I entered into college as the enrolled student of St. Joseph’s, my all the perception became false. I found entirely a different college as shown in the typical Bollywood movies. There were several students who were just entered into their adulthood. The average age group of student was barely 18-19 years. More bizarrely the college was far different from other colleges. There were strict rules & regulations like school. We were bound to attend all the lectures. Monday to Friday was heavily booked with six consecutive sessions of lecture and only Saturday was a half day. I thought this is school or college. Minimum 80% attendance was required to seat for the selection exam. Not only this, every month, there was a repetition test, a kind of a monthly test that too in college. There was no student union in our college. However, Government College was not like of school rather it was a true college.

Normal lectures began for the new session. I was very excited and happy as well. Occasionally, I pinched myself during the lectures. I thought it is just a dream. But in reality, I was present in the class and I was the registered student of St. Joseph’s College. I was one step closer to my father’s dream. Success, success only success was his word. The seating arrangement was made in such a way that boys and girls may seat in two different sides. In those days, I didn’t make any friendship with any girls. It was clear instruction from my parents to not talk with girls because they may become constraint to the prospective career.

Weeks and days past, for the first time in my student life, I bunked my class in the influence of friends. One day professor Gosh, newly appointed associate professor came into our class for the Business Communication subject. In order to begin the class, he started taking the attendance of the pupil. My friend, Sam told me; ‘let’s bunk the classes.

I asked, ‘why’?

‘He is very boring. Better after answering our attendance call; we will go to coffee shop’. Sam said.

I said, ‘not a bad idea, let’s go’.

All of a sudden, Prof Gosh became aware about the activities. By the time Sam was already outside the class. When I turned back, already plenty of back benchers were in coffee shop and now it was my turn. At that time professor didn’t said anything and he continued taking calls. Unfortunately due to over activities of the boys, professor became conscious. At that point of the time, I was hiding behind the large pillar which was just situated near the window. Professor noticed most of the boys are out of the class and in order to inspect, he begin walking towards the exit. I was about to be caught, luckily his mobile phone ranged which was kept on the table. The moment he turned back, promptly I jumped out from the window. It was the most thrilling experience of my life. By this for the first time in my life, I bunked lecture or class.

With the joy and happiness we reach to the coffee shop. Sam ordered two cup of latte and cappuccino. After few minutes, I witnessed a group of girls from other department. May be they could be from other colleges as well, I had no clear idea. Astoundingly, they were smoking cigarette and for the first time I saw a girl student smoking a cigarette. Then quickly I learnt, girls are very hazardous and they are really constraint to success. If I make a friendship with them, maybe I will learn smoking, drinking alcohols and eventually I will end up with drugs.

Days and months passed, I continued my classes and roaming here and there with Sam. With the influence of Sam, I purchase a brand new DSLR camera. He was a good photographer. He always taught me the different art of photography. By the course of time, we developed a strong bond of friendship. Our thoughts were simple. We had nothing to do with other boys and girls of the college or class. We always remain engaged in our world. We didn’t attend the orientation program and fresher’s party. It was not our cup of tea. Only taking photography and collecting postal stamps of different country was our hobby.

Finally, the session ended for the first year of the college. I always found mathematics as Hebrew & Greek. The big question came into my mind that how I will clear the math paper in upcoming University exam.

Winter has just started and it was very chilling. Ghost of mathematics attacked my mind. I was very weak in mathematics and I had no idea, how I will secure passing marks. One day I was going to college from motor stand, I saw Mitra Sir. Promptly an idea popped into my mind that he is our subject teacher.

After a week, winter vacation announced. It was a golden period for me. I had two useful months. I thought, I will capitalize those months to train myself in mathematics. One fine morning, I went to talk with dad and I said, ‘dad as you know I am very weak in mathematics and I need to take coaching for the same’.

Dad – okay, so do you know any tutor?

I – yes, I know dad.

Dad – who?

I – he is my professor.

Dad – so what is the problem? Go and join the coaching, I have to pay the money and you have to secure the numbers.

I – dad, actually college is closed now and he lives in airport area. I don’t know his place and I have no idea whether he will take me or not. So, dad you need to talk to him.

Dad – let’s go and I will talk for you.

Same day dad managed to find his location and he made Mitra sir to teach me Business Mathematics. I joined him because I knew that he will make me pass in selections.

After two months selection test came and as per my plan, I manage to pass in all Honors subject including Business Mathematics. But after the selection, problem remained the same. The University exam was there. In order to get promotion to second year, I was supposed to pass the University exam. Unfortunately for the honors students, the honors subjects was 100 marks paper.

Finally, the university exam began. The first paper was Accountancy. It was four hour long exam. My knowledge of subject matter was fairly good and I did well that day. Next paper was Business Mathematics. As soon as I got the question paper in my hand, I became nervous with the sets of questions. Literally, all the questions were in Hebrew for me. Immediately I prayed God to help me to secure the passing marks. I presumed; it is do or die situation. One hour passed nothing was started yet. I tried to look around but due to immense vigilance of teachers nobody was allowed to move or look here and there. It was clear that I am not going to pass this year.

After a week general papers started and each of the papers were consists of fifty marks of questions. Only fifteen marks were required to pass the same. General subjects were like a soft cake for me. I easily cleared each and every subject.

Few months’ later results declared and as per my expectation, I got fifty two marks in Accountancy and only four marks in Business Mathematics. Thus, I failed in first year of college. I was sad but I was mentally prepared for such outcome. My all the friends including Sam got promoted to second year. Due to this life stopped there for me.

That particular day, I returned home with my report card. Luckily, dad was out of station, mom realized something unusual by reading my face.

I said, ‘mom, everything is over for me. Stop dreaming for me. Now, I have decided that I will join our family business.’

Due to such words, mom became shocked and she started crying like anything. She knew that I got failed in first year of college. That was the biggest loss for her. She always wanted to me get a valid degree, so that she can say to the world that her son is an educated one.

After few days, dad came back from the business trip. Without breathing a fresh air, he straightforward asked me about the report card.

In reply I said, ‘umm dad, I have decided to join your business and I firmly believe degree is not a compulsory. I always thought that without any formal education, you created a huge business empire. That’s why I have decided to join our business. Getting a degree from the college is an utterly waste of time.’

All of sudden his phone ranged, it was a call from his office. He saw the report card while talking to the phone. Simultaneously, his color of face turned red hot. Very angrily he looked upon me and promptly he disconnected the phone. He wanted to speak something luckily mom called me from inside the kitchen. Anyhow she saved my soul from the dangerous paws of Hitler.

It was the just beginning of my bad days. Gradually, I went to depression due to my results. Dad also stopped talking with me. He never allowed to me join his office. By the time I also forget to shave. For many weeks and days I didn’t took bath as well.

Mom was not happy with my conditions. Slowly but surely she presumed that my studies are over and one day I will join our family business. But more importantly, she was more worried about my health. Backlog in first year of college made me a true failure in the eye Hitler. It directly caressed my ego.
