Sunderban, The forest of mangroves

Mangrove forest are mostly found in the alluvial deltas of Ganga, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri rivers. The Sunderban in West Bengal is the largest mangrove forest in the world followed by Gujarat and then islands of Andaman & Nicobar.


Mangroves are Halophytes which means they most thrive in swampy raline coastal conditions; among various Mangroves forest Sunderban is largest mangrove in the world where there are various types of trees & shrubs that grows in the saline water. The word Sunderban means "beautiful forest". The forest is come to around 334 species of trees. And it is UNESCO world Heritage Site.

Mangrove forest is important for our environment as it solves the problem of soil erosion by establishing sediments with tangled root system. They also maintain water quality, water clarity, filtering pollutants. Mangrove have been used for timber for building materials & boats. And it provides fuel-wood for cooking & heating.
