Despite extensive cultural
background, India suffers in reality. The ground reality of rural society is
totally different. The story brings out the difficulties faced by India and its
people after the reward of independence. Though, eighteen long years has been
passed Indian society was bounded by orthodox nature of mindset, strict caste
system, untouchability, feudalism and so on.
The novel revolves around the
story of a village named Narayangarh, Uttar Pradesh. Here Munna Baniya son of
Hari and Mira Baniya is the main protagonist who is the prime victim of
orthodox society. Munna and his childhood friend Ravi Shaw are wise persons who
wants to eradicate all ill system of a society. They tried hard to establish
good governance and bring reform in the society via contesting a Panchayat
Election.
Due to high rate of land tax
(Lagaan), Hari was not able to provide basic facilities to his son Munna. The
higher rate of tax was to be given to Lord Mahendra Singh. The society was
governed by the orthodox nature of Priest called Omkar Panday who belongs to
Brahmin community.
When Mahendra Singh won the
Panchayat Election, the whole system was being corrupted and ill governance was
brought by him. Hari and many other villagers who were against Mahendra Singh
were killed by Mafia King Karim Khan of Azamgarh, who was a good friend of him.
In order to establish Ram Rajya
(good governance) and to bring reforms in the society, Munna tried hard to won
the upcoming Panchayat Election. After winning the election, he constructs a
dam to provide the water for the agriculture and brought a good governance.
In a consequence, Mahendra Singh
and Karim Khan starts slaying the main supporters including his father Hari.
They planned to blow up the newly constructed dam so that there could be a
flood situation in the village.
Thus, the novel is a complete
blend of cultures & traditions, emotions, friendship, parenthood, political
thriller & action. It will bring a thrilling experience for every readers.
